Depict Task

Amusements

I like this short film because of its simplicity, it only has four shot types, medium close up from behind, a wide shot, a medium shot and a long shot. They have no talking except from at the end which the phrase "that was shit" this whole short film is about a guy trying to impress a girl and in the end it doesn't, it shows how hard it is to impress someone in the real world and does reflect that sometimes the outcomes we want aren't always going to happen. Throughout the film, everything is very symmetrical and adds to the simplicity factor because there are only a few props and a fence. There is no special effects or filters which create a very real, very true to life aspect. In the starting shot before the title splays itself on the scene you see the girl look at him while he is not, indicating to the audience or watcher that she is interested in the guy which creates a basis and an idea of what the film is to the watcher. Then there is a shot where they both look at each other which connotes that they both are interested in one another. The girl’s body language seems very closed off and her facial expressions suggest that she is not as easily impressed, while the boy’s body language is very open and could indicate he is very friendly which suggests why he’s trying to impress her. It is clear to us in the scene that they have been drinking, but not much because they seem quite sober, this could indicate that he was trying to get her to loosen up as she seems closed off. The sparkler is in the centre of the scene showing its importance to the film, most likely the importance to the boy as it affects if she will be impressed by him or not.

The End
Depict/The End

I really like this film also because of its simplicity. The very creative idea of using an object as a playing tool. There is only one shot in the whole 90 seconds which adds to its simplicity. The facial expressions are very relevant to how someone acts in that situation and no words are said from the main character which makes it even funnier. The way lighting is used is made to connect with the idea of the world ending and creates a dramatic difference to the normal non-apocalyptic outcome, it symbolizes how the world can just break in a matter of seconds, all it needs is a small push. It tells us about the futility of life and may be hinting to us that we should get our act together to help the world because we are not that far from destruction, turning the world around sometimes doesn't mean it will implode due to natural causes, it could just mean a quickening of time, which could be our own man-made self-caused destruction. The sound adds to this idea of ‘the end’ by showing screaming, the sound of fire, crashes and much more. This alone tells us that nothing good will happen and the title tells us that it is our end. The comedy lies within the man who is controlling it. He is a typical ‘civilian’ who has the world in his hands, literally. The fact that he is clumsy enough to tip the world over and make it fall off the table makes it even more ironic that a huge catastrophe happened because of one simple man who found a simple job at an office and spun his seemingly normal glue around and was so astounded by what he could control, he ended the world.

This clip makes me question a lot of things, in a psychological way it is showing how far people will go to get what they want and sometimes that doesn't work out the way you would want it to. The shots are very flowy which makes it seem very organized and simple. There is only a few shots at the start and a long shot at the end which builds tension.  It is full of suspense and the music gradually builds creating a anticipating bit of nervousness on what this would reveal. This was made in Mexico where football/soccer is a very bit sport and could also signify that because Mexico has won so many times there music be some sort of supernatural element to it. It transports the viewer back to the 70s and creates a familiar yet spooky vibe to the intentions of the family. It focuses on their faces in a medium close up and shows the tension which is building with the family, due to the fact there isn't a father there you would assume that the father is one of the football players, at the end a touch of comedy is added to it due to the fact they went out of their way to practice voodoo on the other team yet they loose and it was all for nothing, a release of tension which makes the viewer laugh. The way the little girl throws the voodoo doll shows the anger at loosing and how much it means to them, bringing back the tension and annoyance taken earlier from the audience, although a small bit of humor remains. It is very well executed and planned out, even though it is in another language the message is given well. Another simple yet complex short film.
